I decided to do a "Geek Confessions" meme, inspired by mirz333 (hers is here: mirz-alt.deviantart.com/journa… ). The rules are simple: Just describe 5 of your biggest "geek" interests (or obsessions). Mine are...

1: Doctor Who -- The classic series, anyway. I feel kind of luke-warm about the new series. Although, I will admit that now that I've seen the new ones, I can't watch the old episodes any more. They drag so slowly. 90% of any given episode is people standing around talking. Sure, they're talking about aliens who are trying to destroy Earth, but still...

I did the whole "obsessive fanboy" thing -- watching every episode multiple times, going to conventions, writing fan-fiction... I even planned out what I would do if I ever somehow became producer of the show. In Chicago it was broadcast late on Sunday nights. I would watch with the sound down to avoid waking up my mother -- and I mean all the way down. I had seen every episode enough times that I had all the dialogue memorized; I didn't need to have the sound on.

Actor John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness in the new series, also grew up in Chicago and was a huge fan. Which means that I probably met him at a convention at some point and didn't realize it. Speaking of conventions...

2: Star Trek: The Next Generation. There have been a number of Star Trek series over the years, but this one was my favorite. I was a huge fan when it was on and even considered going to a convention dressed as Data. I had the right look for it, I could have pulled it off. I had a plan to win the costume contest: Since Star Trek costumes are generally pretty boring (any idiot can put on a Starfleet uniform), the way to win is to do something extra that amuses the audience. I wrote a tongue-twister and practiced it until I could say it flawlessly. But I never got the uniform or the make-up and never did it. :(

3: Math. I've been a math freak my whole life. I don't know if that makes me a geek or a nerd. :paranoid: Sometimes, when I'm stressed out, I do math to relax. :O

4: Computers. When I was 11 I got an Apple II and learned to program. To this day, Basic is my favorite computer language in spite of the fact that it's the most hated by everybody else. My current love is the Kindle. We have a little B&W Kindle, and I sometimes get to play with a Kindle Fire.

This morning I needed a recipe, so rather than print it out or write it down, I transferred it to the Kindle and brought that to the kitchen. How can I not love something that does that?

5: Webcomics. They're just like comic books except they're free and you don't have to go out to the shop to get them. When I first started reading them, there were no webcomic review sites, so I started one. Immediately, several others sprang up, run by people who had more time and resources than I did. :noes: So mine quickly folded.

Before we started Relativity, Michelle and I had our own webcomic, Bitmap World, which still updates erratically. :D

Nowadays, I have a few core comics I obsessively read every time they update, and a few others I drop-in on occasionally. Most of the comics I like update once every few months, so it's a low-commitment obsession. :)
OK, so two weeks ago, I wrote a journal where I revealed 25 facts about myself, but 5 of them were horrific, terrible lies. If you haven't read that one yet, click here and go read it.

I'd like to thank everybody who participated. I appreciate you taking the time to read my journal and comment on it. And now, here is the complete truth:

1. This list is a challenge for me, because I don't like talking about myself.

True. Also see #22 below.

2. I accidentally deleted the first version of this list and had to start over.

Ha-ha, this is true. Although I had just started, so I actually didn't lose very much.

3. I did not read mirz333's list before writing this.

False. Of course I read her list.

4. I actually came up with 21 truths and 6 lies and then eliminated 1 of each.

That's true. I knew I would probably end up hating a couple and removing them, and that's exactly what happened.

5. I can never be an astronaut, because my face always itches. I would go crazy trying to scratch myself through my helmet.

That's true. Ever since I was a kid, I've always had to scratch every few minutes. No idea why.

6. I have a terrible memory.

True.

7. I have never been arrested.

Also true. Thank goodness.

8. I grew up in a small town where nothing ever happened.

This is true. It was very boring. Apparently, things started happening after I left, though.

9. I have visited over 40 of the 50 states in the US.

True. I've lost count of exactly how many. I've never been to Alaska or Hawaii, and there's a few states I'm unsure about.

10. I have never been north of the arctic circle.

True. I have been to Canada, but not the northern part.

11. The best advice I've ever received was to always keep a spare change of clothes in your desk drawer. I kept spare clothing at every job I ever had. I never needed it, but if I ever did, it was there.

This is true. It's also very good advice.

12. One day at work I needed to go on the roof and sweep snow out of the satellite dishes.

This is false, and it serves as a cautionary tale about being lazy. One day at work a call came in and out of lazyness, I lied and told my coworker I was busy and couldn't take it. The call turned out to be that the satellite dishes were full of snow and someone had to go onto the roof and sweep them out. I was so jealous. I'd never been on the roof and always wanted to see what it was like up there, and now I'd missed my chance.

13. Another tale from work: One day my boss told me to clean my desk, so I shoved everything into a drawer. He commended me for it, but I could never find anything again.

This is true.

14. I printed out a quote about doing hard work and pinned it to my cubical wall to fool my bosses into thinking I was a better worker.

True. I don't know if it worked or not. The quote was from Martin Luther King, Jr: "If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music... Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say: Here lived a great street sweeper, who swept his job well."

15. I once memorized pi to 80 digits, but I've now forgotten most of it.

False. I may be a math geek, but I've never memorized pi beyond 14 digits. I still remember it, though. :)

16. One of my biggest fears is that I'll give someone a gift they won't like.

True. This strikes terror into my heart. You have no idea.

17. I can count to ten in 15 languages.

False. I'm very ineterested in foreign languages, but I can only count to ten in Spanish and German.

18. I proposed to mirz333 with a cheap plastic ring from a gumball machine (which she still has).

True. Later we went out and bought a real ring.

19. My favorite TV show of all time is "Green Acres".

True. But only because "Green Acres" is the best show that ever existed.

20. I've invented a nonsense word which I have never told anybody. If I ever happen to meet a time-travelling version of my future self, this word will serve to prove that he is really me.

True. I won't need it though, because I've *also* decided that if I ever time travel, I'll try to avoid meeting my younger self.

21. I saw "Hamlet" for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

True. Hamlet is awesome. I want to write Hamlet fan-fiction.

22. Socially, I am a coward. I'm always afraid of saying the wrong thing and having people not like me.

True. I tend to keep a lot of my opinions to myself for this reason.

23. I once wrote a story with a complex time-travel plot. It was based on a dream I'd had, and was actually so convoluted there's no way I could have created it while awake.

True. It was Doctor Who fan-fiction.

24. I once dated a girl who had dated John Cusack.

This is false, although I did date a girl who had gone to school with John Cusack. And mirz333 went to school with Jenny McCarthy. So I guess this means I have connections in Hollywood?

25. I have never been hospitalized.

True, thank goodness. :)

So, in summary: The false statements are 3, 12, 15, 17, and 24. :)
Also known as "20 Truths and 5 Lies". I got this from mirz333, who had gotten it from someone else... it's been going around for a while. (I make it sound like a virus :() So, below are 25 facts about myself. 20 are true and 5 are false. Your challenge is to figure out which are the 5 lies and leave a comment below. There aren't any prizes or anything, this is just for fun.

I'll post the answers next weekend.

Mirz deactivated. As much as people may think this is some drama-queen move, it's not. Far more is going on in her life and health than people know or understand, and it's unfair when people make presumptions about her personality and motives based on the very limited things you see and hear on a website.

I am upset about this myself as I didn't know she deactivated until she told me after-the-fact this morning. Without getting into detail, I contributed to this decision with something boneheaded I did. There is not one thing that brought her to this decision, but many that built up to this point.

Will she come back? I don't know and I don't think she knows. Michelle still feels committed to the promises she made. If she decides not to come back, she will still honor all of the gifts and prizes she owes people. Those will be uploaded to my account or the dump account and I will contact the recipients. Any pending articles will be handled as well.

As for Relativity, I will be admin-ing the group and we'll see how things go from there.

I am going to disable comments because I don't want people to think this is a ploy for "please come back, we love you" messages. You guys don't know Michelle at all and she has never wanted that kind of thing.

Comic + Be a Critic

Journal Entry: Sat May 4, 2013, 9:38 PM
mirz333 and I always intended Relativity to be a comic (which is why the group is named RelativityComic). So, we were super-excited when aimee5 offered to do the artwork for a comic for us. And now here it is! Squee!

aimee5 put a lot of hard work into it, so go tell her how much you like it! Thanks!!!

:iconemoteline1plz::iconemoteline2plz::iconemoteline3plz:

Also, I've been featured in inknalcohol's "Be a Critic" series. Go check it out:

And if you do leave me any critiques, I'll appreciate it! Thank-you!

Featured and Kiriban

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 27, 2013, 6:05 AM
First the exciting news. The fiction serial I write with Mirz123 was featured in the Literary Compass.  It would be great if you checked it out. It would be even more cool if you faved and commented.

Literary Compass - Vol. 7Welcome
If one is looking for Literature, you don't need to go far on deviantART. There is a large community of writers and a plethora of work to peruse. Featuring  genres such as fantasy, mystery, horror, and romance, one would be hard-pressed to find an area not covered. However, due to the nature of the site, shorter works tend to get more focus. It's easier to quickly read a poem or a short story, and thus many of the feature articles on dA showcase those works. However, there are many novelists and serial writers among the mix, oftentimes fighting an uphill battle to have their works seen and appreciated.
With that in mind, I have started an article to spotlight some of those artists and their literary-worlds. The works covered in this feature will exclusively be long-form fiction such as novels, trilogies, etc., or fiction serials.
Editor's Note: Some people feel it is questionable when a writer who publishes an article series features their own work. Mir

If you haven't seen the Lit-Compass before, it's a great series written by Mirz featuring long-form fiction. It can always use more love, so checking out the group may be a good idea, too. ;)

:iconliterarycompass:

In other news, I'm not that far from 50,000 pageviews. I think I should do a kiriban or something.  What do you guys think?  Of course, that would also mean that I'd have to get a prize together.

And since I like to hear from you guys, even though I'm terrible at replying, what's your current Youtube favorite these days?

Now tag 5-10 people to do this meme. But be nice

1. When did you start writing?

As soon as I could write. My earliest efforts were comics, because drawing was easier for me. My father still has a comic I drew when I was six about a boy who went to watch fireworks with his family and got scared by the noise.

2. When you were a beginning writer, what did your write primarily? What do you write now, primarily?  (i.e. romance, fan-fiction, poetry)

I used to write primarily science-fiction. I still do, actually. (But not as much fan-fiction.)

3. How often do you write?

Whenever I can, which isn't often. :(

4. When is your favorite time of the day to write?

Early in the morning, when it's quiet in the house.

5. Do you have a writing muse? If so, who/what?

Not sure what a muse is, to be honest. I guess mirz333, since she inspires me to write. She's also my editor. :D

6. What is your most popular lit piece?

I co-write a lot of stuff with mirz333, and it's posted on her account. Of the pieces which I have on my account, the most popular is NewsflashReports of my death were true.

7. What is the piece you are currently writing?

A Relativity alternate-universe side-story featuring Ravenswood.

8. What is the piece you most recently finished?

9. What piece are you most proud of?

The Paupers Who Saw the World   It was fifty feet tall, and appeared to be made entirely out of smoke. When it spoke, it was with a voice of thunder. "You will bring me the Minotaurs of Doom," it said.
The two humans standing before it had heard this before. The smoke-creature had made the same demand earlier. "I already told you," shouted one of the humans. "One of the Minotaurs disappeared twenty-five years ago. The other one alone won't do you any good!"
"You two are time-travellers. Yes, I know these things. You will fetch both Minotaurs and bring them to me."
   "What happens if we don't?"
"I have extended my... I do not know the word in English."
"Arms?" asked one of the humans.
   "Tentacles?" suggested the other.
"No!" shouted the smoke-creature, lightning flashing angrily within it.
   "Lightning?"
"Lightning! I have extended my lightning a

10. What piece are you most disappointed in?

Woods PromptMe & some guys from the office. Blowing off steam after a hard week. That's what we told ourselves.
Saturday afternoon. Mike had to work so he wasn't there, but the rest of us from the IT department showed up at the Paintball place. A bunch of geeks who wore button-down shirts and ties during the week. All of us with our casual clothes today -- Iron Man T-shirts and whatnot.
We ran into the woods and fanned out. We were split into teams, officially, but decided that it would be more fun to play every-man-for-himself. I headed deep into the woods and looked for a good place to hide.
My plan was to climb into a tree where I couldn't be seen, and then shoot people as they walked past below. But after sitting in the tree for what I estimated to be ten minutes, no-one had come by.
Finally I jumped down and began looking for the others, my paint gun at the ready. My head twitched at every twig-snap.
I couldn't find them. I couldn't find anybody. I walked for what seemed like forever. I m
I shouldn't be so hard on it, though. It was a writing prompt, which by their very nature are hit-or-miss. This one just meanders around with no clear direction or point.

11. From all of your stories, who is/are your favorite character(s) and why? (try to limit it to 3)

Crockwell. She's an alien scout who poses as a human being and gets a job at a software company in order to spy on Earth's defense system. To compensate for her difficulty with trying to understand the subtleties of human interaction, she pretends to be autistic.

12. What is the best compliment you ever got on your writing?

On the Relativity website, dully101 mentioned that he was depressed but one of our stories cheered him up. I'm so glad we were able to have that effect on someone.

13. What is your main goal with writing?

Entertain people. :)

14. Have you ever been published?

Self-published on-line: www.blacktorrent.us

I know some people don't count that as being "really" published, so I'll also mention that when I was a teenager, I had a short story (which I'm now embarrassed of) that appeared in a small-press magazine called "The Fiction Primer". (By "small-press", I mean I think this guy photocopied it in his basement.)

15. If tomorrow you learned that you would never be able to formally publish a story, would you still write?

Definitely.

16. If you could get a Daily Deviation on one of your lit pieces, which would it be?

I had high hopes for The Paupers Who Saw the World   It was fifty feet tall, and appeared to be made entirely out of smoke. When it spoke, it was with a voice of thunder. "You will bring me the Minotaurs of Doom," it said.

Everybody, thank-you.

I'm not dead!

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 8, 2013, 4:14 AM
I know... it's so lame to write an "I'm not dead" journal... I'm sorry. But the old journal was about two months old and starting to smell funny... I needed to change it.

So here, for your amusement, is a drawing by aimee5 of one of my OCs, Melody, who's both a barista and a martial arts expert:

mirz-alt's Melody Krol by aimee5

In other news... my wife and I have been married for 19 years, which is 18 years and 10 months longer than Kim Kardashian's marriage, so that's kind of impressive.

Sorry I haven't been around...

Journal Entry: Tue Nov 20, 2012, 4:34 AM

I know I haven't been very visible on dA lately... or on Twitter or anywhere else I hang out for that matter. I haven't been in PizzaPixels very much. Embarrassingly, I've only made one emoticon for NaNoEmo so far, and today's the... 20th? Yikes!

What I've been busy with is fixing up the Relativity website (http://blacktorrent.us) for our one-year anniversary. It's hard to believe, but it's been a whole year since putting up our first story, Lost and Found. We're in this for the long haul; from the beginning we knew we were going to take several years to tell all the stories we wanted to tell. But the one-year mark is a milestone, so we wanted to celebrate a bit. We're hoping to get all of the changes done and relaunch the site on December 1.

Ever since our site opened, there were things about it we wanted to fix up. But what with life and whatnot, we just never had the time. The anniversary gave us a reason to set life aside for a while and focus on the improvements we've always wanted. So, Michelle and I have both been hard at work fixing up the site. We're getting a new forum (the old one was overrun with spam) and a new gallery, and we're going over the stories we've already published and re-editing them. One of the wonders of the internet: We can edit stories after they're published. You can't do that with print.

On a side-note: Akismet is an amazing add-on to Wordpress. It's been doing a fantastic job at stopping the spam. If it weren't for Akismet, we would have to shut down comments altogether. We get about 500 spam messages a day. Seriously, spammers? 500 a day? Don't you have anything better to do with your lives? Akismet has caught every single one of them. Thank-you, Akismet.

And now for some art. None of this has anything to do with Relativity, it's just some random stuff I like. I'm putting it here because I'm used to reading Michelle's journal entries, and frankly, a journal without some art at the end of it looks incomplete.

Holy DD, Torrent! + CONTEST!

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 25, 2012, 1:50 AM

:bulletwhite: Mirz123 and I woke up in the middle of the night because our son was having trouble sleeping. Mirz decided to check dA and promptly announced I got a Daily Deviation! ravenswd.deviantart.com/art/Cu… Wasn't expecting that...at all.

Thank you to stuck-in-suburbia and SprinkleSprankles.  Yesterday was a pretty crappy day, so it was nice to see today starting off on a better note.

:bulletwhite: A reminder! The Relativity contest is still in full swing.  Your OC with our OC as a hero or villain in the Relativity universe. There is a great list of prizes, and quite frankly, not a lot of entries.  So, the odd are better than ever.  Categories are: Traditional/Digital/Etc, Pixel and Emoticons, and Literature.

Contest has been extended to October 22nd, so still plenty of time.  For more information, check out this article ---> mirz-alt.deviantart.com/journa…

:bulletwhite: I'd like to show off a piece we just received. This is part two to the commission piece of Relativity, the heroes in and out of costume. Great, huh?

RELATIVITY_Behind the masks by FranciscoETCHART

Also, here is a picture of Phillip Norfallon, a character of Mirz123's which was inspired by me!  Well, me, 20 years ago.

Portrait Commission: Phillip by fee-absinthe

And, last, a point commission of the "three friends" from Relativity.

Commission: Brotherhood by elfdust

:bulletwhite: Thank-you to everyone who has recently faved/watched/commented. I'm just getting back into the swing of things after the birth of our baby and hope to get caught up on dA replies this week.

Hope to catch up with everything soon!
We just wanted everyone to know that our baby was born on Saturday, August 25. A healthy baby boy, his name is Michael Hugo. He weighed 7 1/2 pounds and was 19 1/2 inches. Mom & baby are doing fine. The baby was delivered by C-section so Mom is still in the hospital, but she and the baby will be coming home soon.

Here's a couple of pictures for your viewing enjoyment:

Relativity Contest

Sun Aug 5, 2012, 7:05 AM

:happybounce: Mirz123/mirz333 and I are proud to announce our 2nd annual Relativity contest!

The theme this year (overwhelmingly selected by our Watchers) is:

Your OC as a Hero or Villain in the Relativity Universe

Since this is a Relativity contest, simply drawing a picture of your OC as a superhero will not count.  You must incorporate something from Relativity into the piece.  Either another character from the universe or something that is a direct and obvious reference to the world.

ANY of the Relativity characters can be used.  That includes the characters in or out of costume.  Supporting characters or villains may also be used.

A full list of characters, profile sheets, and references can be found in the RelativityComic Group here ---> relativitycomic.deviantart.com…

Your character can be, but doesn't have to be, a costumed hero or villain.  Your OC could be a heroic cop on the police force or a regular citizen who rises to the occasion to help the heroes solve a crime.  Those are just examples, so use your imagination.

Note: We prefer contestants creatively use an existing OC for the contest.  However, since many may not have an OC that would work, you may create a new OC just for the contest.

There will be three categories:

1. Traditional/Digital -- This is the broadest category and pretty much includes everything from sketches to photo-manipulation.

2. Pixel - This includes dolling, emotions, and general pixelling.  Honestly, this category is here because we are pixel-artists and we want to give our compatriots an even competing field.

3. Literature - Self Explanatory.  Stories should be limited to 5000 words.  Poetry will be accepted.

Each category will have a winner and a runner-up.  There will also be a grand-prize "Best of Show" entry which can be from any of the three categories.

:bulletblue: Artwork must be new and created on or after August 5, 2012.

:bulletblue: You MUST note the contest and link back to this page in your Artist's Notes.

:bulletblue: Submissions should be submitted to this Group folder.  You do not have to be a member of the group to submit.  ---> relativitycomic.deviantart.com…;

:bulletblue: All entries must be PG-13 or better. Granted, we don't mind something a bit more mature, as the series is definitely on the grittier side.  But overly graphic or revealing pieces will not be accepted.  (i.e. suggestive sex is okay--graphic sex, no and keep any possible gore on the tame side)

:bulletblue: You can enter up to three times. In one or multiple categories.  However, you will only be eligible to win once, overall.

:bulletblack: How your OC is involved is up to you.  We love creativity. Some examples of possible ideas include: Your OC meeting with a Team Torrent character to solve a crime. Perhaps your OC falls in love with one of the heroes.  Or maybe your OC has a grudge against Black Torrent and decides villainry is the way to go.

:bulletblack: We are big on story, so quality of art is good, but we will be looking at how it all ties together.

:bulletblack: Any questions should be posted to the comments here and we'll try to answer them as best we can.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

Page Spiff-up

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 15, 2012, 5:26 PM

Mirz123 has been bugging me to get my page prettied-up for a while.  So, with a bit of help from her, I've done just that.  So, if you have a moment, check it out.

Totally want to get back working on Relativity, so if you want to see some new stuff from me, be sure to watch the group RelativityComic.

Speaking of Relativity, check out these great gift commissions Mirz got me for my birthday. <3

One of the groups I run recently had a person join as co-founder and proceed to make a number of changes without our permission. They joined with the message "ADD ME OR I WILL KILL YOU" which is odd because somehow, "join requests" for co-founders was set to "automatically approve".

I don't know how that happened. Was there a glitch in dA? Did we accidentally set it wrong somehow? Whatever the case, we managed to stop this person before they could do too much damage. But still, this was a scary situation. As co-founder, they had pretty much full control of the group and could have done all sorts of damage.

If you are the admin of any groups, you should double-check to make sure that all of the permissions are set properly. Especially co-founder and contributor.
